Wine is an alcoholic beverage that is produced through the fermentation of fruits containing sugars. There are four major types of wine: red, white, rose, and champagne. White wines basically go with lighter meals, such as salads and sandwiches, whereas red wines work better with heartier meals, namely red meats. Another rule that you should abide by, states that you should begin with lighter wines and then progress to heavier ones throughout the course of your meal.
The idea here is that if you start off with too strong of a wine you will not be able to taste the full flavor of the lighter wine later on in the meal.
